Elementary Montessori Materials Continue into Adolescence

Montessori materials truly go DEEP. Perhaps Montessori didn't have time to develop every detail from birth to college, but she left us an outline and some people have been able to follow Dr. Montessori's trailblazing style. 

Looking at the Elementary and/or Primary Materials used into Montessori Adolescent Algebra
  • Geometry Sticks
  • Fraction Circles (metal works fine, but the plastic materials with the multiplies of each fraction family from 1 to 1/10 – you do NOT need or want the children to use fraction segments beyond 1/10)
  • Bead bars, squares and cubes from the bead cabinet (“complete bead material”)
  • Wooden cubing material
  • Power of 2 (Power of 3 if you purchased that too – or just make one)
  • Pythagorean Insets
  • Binomial Cube
  • Multiplication Checkerboard
  • Pegboard (ensure it is sized to your geometry sticks – so they all align properly – this generally means holes that are 1 cm apart from one another)
  • Yellow Area Material
  • Large and small geometric solids
  • Number/operations tiles – with some additions, including adding in the fraction labels as well (called Special Math Symbols on the adolescent album)
  • Set of 12 blue right-angled triangles


For review purposes:
  • Decanomial bead bar box (called “large bead bar box” in the album)
  • Constructive triangles



Montessori Without Materials !?

You can certainly do "Authentic" Montessori at home without the materials. How is that possible? Because pure Montessori is about the following concepts: 

  • *beauty, simplicity, order
  • *follow the child (the child's interests, abilities, needs)
  • *OBSERVE - and RESPOND appropriately according to the plane of development and individual needs/interests
  • *provide KEY experiences - not overwhelming with too much information, or 10 materials to teach the same concept; or even 1 material that is so busy it doesn't allow for focus
  • *routine and beauty/simplicity/order that allows for developing long periods of concentration
  • *movement integrated with learning, balanced with moments of stillness and silence. 

Not a single specifically Montessori material mentioned ;) 



and for those who do use the specifically designed Montessori materials that do provide the Keys to the World and the Keys to the Universe? They phase out, until there are almost no such materials in upper elementary.

Science supply area (in elementary) - you want the generic supplies available, along with a few resources to generate ideas, so that if they have a question about something, they can work it out relatively quickly.

Anyone using AMI-style elementary albums now have the option at Home Science Tools to purchase a kit for the geography and biology albums - with just about everything you need in one package!


(I do not make any money when you purchase that kit - it is simply something I set up to make the obtaining of the needed materials easier for those who are using AMI elementary Montessori albums).

Wooden Hierarchical Material - Number Cards


This material is a clear indicator of the differences between primary and elementary, even with the same material. It is also a perfect example of how the outward appearance of Montessori changes with each plane of development - so for those who jump ship after primary because they instinctively know that the primary experience is not appropriate for their second plane child, here is just one teeny tiny example of how Montessori addresses those very needs. 

At primary, the children can receive this presentation – it uses place-value colored number cards with spaces between the hierarchies, NO commas. These cards are available for download in a number of locations – free or for purchase – or can easily be handmade.
DIRECT AIM: focus on place value and the new hierarchy (millions) - counting the zeroes. This age does not need the comma for this presentation. (they do get the comma with the dot game and can use the comma with the division with racks and tubes work)

At elementary, the child should get this work again (or for the first time), because now, there is a new component: The Comma. The primary level colored cards can be used, just add a green comma after each number, such that when the cards are stacked in number formation, you have the following number:
1, 111, 111 

Those of you who have been following the recent blog posts and various discussions may recall one more aspect: some elementary albums describe the elementary number cards as being written in black (and still with a comma).

FINAL RESULT in the Real World: 

  • Primary: colored, no commas 
  • Elementary: colored OR black numerals, with commas to match (either green or black)

Homeschool option:
Take the cards from the Elementary Bank Game cards if they are laminated, use a dry-erase marker to write in the comma for this presentation; then remove it for Bank Game work. 

Great Lessons - Materials


Within AMI (American Montessori Internationale), the following is a description of the materials for the 5 core Great Lessons to establish Cosmic Education in the elementary Montessori environment.


God with No Hands

  • 4 impressionistic charts
  • materials for 6 demonstrations
  • NOTE: There used to be a 5th chart (solar system) which has been pulled to use at another time (a follow-up telling of the story)
  • NOTE: There used to be far more demonstrations (experiments is a misnomer in this case) which were pulled out to use as follow-ups, thus allowing the story to focus on the core keys, with plenty left for re-tellings and review - going deeper and encouraging a return to the Great Lesson. 


Coming of Life

  • 2 impressionistic charts
  • Timeline of Life (a mute version of the Timeline of Life is a follow-up work)


Coming of Human Beings

  • No materials
  • The focus is on the human connection itself - particularly on love; the children can look at their own arms and legs to see that they do not have specialized protection as animals do. 
  • Note: The two timelines called "First Timeline of Human Beings" and "Second Timeline of Human Beings" are follow-up work in the history album. They are not part of this Third Great Lesson. 


Communication in Signs

What is just in elementary?

Power of 2 Cube

Hierarchical Trinomial Cube (also called "Arithmetic Trinomial Cube" and "Algebraic Trinomial Cube" - all three are the SAME thing) --- there is a story called "The Three Kings" that connects the Trinomial into this new Trinomial with new colors and new concepts.



But no matter the environment, the Trinomial Cube cannot be substituted for the Hierarchical Trinomial Cube - because they teach different things and are colored differently. Sorry!   The good news, the Hierarchical Trinomial Cube isn't just TOO expensive. ;)




Primary Montessori Materials LIVE in the Elementary Classroom


(updated - 11/26/12 - math section!)

There is a sub-set of Montessori materials that is utilized at both primary and elementary. The presentations are different; the teaching concepts are different - and the material proves just how deep it can go!

Teacher in one level or the other and want to know which materials overlap levels?
Homeschool parent transitioning from primary Montessori to elementary Montessori?
Curious for another reason as to the depth of the Montessori materials?

Here goes!

Some items can be very useful if you still have them in elementary - the children may do further exploration (pink tower, brown stair and the like come to mind). But core materials?

Keep the following items:

Exercises of Practical Life: 

  • Primary has care of the environment items on trays on the shelves; elementary has supply shelves, with empty trays to gather what they need. Same items - set up is different
  • Many of the EPL supplies can also be used in the geography area in elementary for demonstrations and such.
















Sensorial: 

  • Geometry Cabinet (geometry in elementary)
  • Constructive Triangles (geometry in elementary)
  • Puzzle maps of the world/continents (could be used in elementary, but don't buy them just for elementary)
  • Binomial Cube (mathematics in elementary; geometry in adolescence)
  • Trinomial Cube (mathematics in elementary; geometry in adolescence)
  • Bells (use initially in elementary, then transition to tone bars; but don't buy them if you are just starting elementary - just use the tone bars)
  • Other stuff is great to have on hand, but if you must be budget/space-conscious, it is ok to let go ;)








Language: 

  • small movable alphabets (at least 3 colors needed in elementary; letters and punctuation on tiles/cardstock and stored in a divided box - like a tacklebox)
  • wooden grammar symbols (multiples of each symbol in a box)
  • (NOTE: reading analysis material from primary is organized different, but you could use most of the same components and add the charts - see this post: Reading/Sentence/Logical Analysis)


Language Extensions: (AMI organization; other albums this includes biology)

  • Plants and Animals
  • (could keep the nomenclature material, but add more components to it - definition strips, more extensive definitions, blank material for the children to create their own)



Mathematics:

  • Golden beads (9 thousands, 45 hundreds, 45 tens, 45 units is all that is needed for elementary)
  • Bead cabinet (all short and long chains, cubes, squares)
  • Fraction circles (metal circles)
  • Large bead frame (short bead frame is primary; if starting your child in elementary, only use the large bead frame)
  • "Decanomial bead bar box" (the set that has 55 of every bead bar, 1-10 - some boxes only have 45, some only have bars 1-9 - these smallers are handy in classrooms; not so useful in homeschools)
  • Division with racks and tubes (short division in primary; short and long division in elementary)
  • (additional math note: if you purchase the elementary negative snake game, you'll have all you need for the primary level snake games)



(note: this list does not include items that if a child "missed" primary, they might find useful as a bridge into elementary - such as the land/water and continent globes - useful but ok to use an on-the-fly adapted presentations with less expensive and spacious materials)

Core Elementary Montessori Materials

The main, core, essential materials needed for the elementary years vary from album set to album set.

The following list corresponds with the AMI albums. This list is not comprehensive for a classroom of multiple children, but represents the core essential materials if you must build slowly or are in a homeschool or tutoring environment. Not every child needs every  material, but this list covers almost every child. 


Environment:
·         Pencils, colored pencils, sharpeners, erasers
·         Paper supplies (various sizes and formats)
·         Receipt tape or similar for making timelines
·         Research resources in every subject area (including dictionary, thesaurus, atlases)
·         Work plan and work journal system


Language:
·         Language Analysis boxes (not the primary version!)
·         Grammar Boxes and filler boxes
·         Grammar Symbols (could be printed on cardstock)
·         3 small movable alphabets in 3 different colors (printed on small tabs, stored in small box)
·         etymological dictionary (or 3)


Mathematics – pull most of what you need from recombining components of the following; this list will get you most of the way:
·         Decanomial Bead Bar Box (55 of each bar, includes the 10s)
·         Bead Bar cabinet
·         Fractions working box (has 10 wholes of each fraction 1-10)
·         Racks and Tubes division (more lower elementary, some use in upper elementary)

·         Pegboard (get one that is 30 by 30 and you can modify for all purposes) and pegs

·         Clock with hands that move correspondingly to one another

Geography:
·         Impressionistic Charts
·         Demonstration supplies (according to the album pages you have) – these will be used for demonstrations and experiments throughout a variety of areas
o    Including glass test tubes and stoppers; heat source; some chemicals
·         Blank material to create nomenclature
·         Economic Geography cards

Art & Music:
·         Research material for composers and artists
·         Research material on musical genres
·         Bells OR tone bars (both is preferable when possible; if can only have one: tone bars in two octaves)
·         Art supplies (brushes, watercolors, clay, etc. according to interest and area of history being studied)

Elementary Montessori Materials


The main Montessori elementary material is a series of impressionistic charts. These charts are designed to entice the child's imagination without giving too much technical information - enough to fuel an interest to study more without giving all the answers. 

When selecting impressionistic charts - choose ones that are truly impressionistic - not cartoony, not "scientific" - but imaginative, beautiful, and to the point. 



Imagination allows for exploration of what cannot be physically explored or experienced. Our understanding of this power enables us to truly assist the children in our environments. Understanding of these concepts is one of the determinants as whether or not the adult is running a real Montessori environment, as opposed to a environment just using Montessori materials. If the adult does not understand the importance of appealing to the imagination, it is very easy to fall into the trap of using the materials and charts as teaching tools or props. Some teachers may use the charts as visual aids, but that is even not their true purpose. Their purpose is to help the imagination of the child work with the reasoning mind to come to a point of understanding. Our materials and charts are certainly important and do provide concrete provocation of the imagination so the child can go from using materials to understanding something in her mind that was not presented with the concrete materials. The child will come to understanding, to conclusions, utilizing the abstract. 



Calculators in Montessori

What calculators do we use in Montessori?

We have a lot - at various ages - but here there are all lumped together:
  • bead bars
  • someone else's eyes
  • built-in control of error (anything where the pieces won't finish going in if one answer is wrong)
  • figuring the problem two ways
  • the human brain (which is mathematically designed)
  • experience
  • intuition developed through experience
  • studying mathematics in history and culture
  • graphing calculator - middle school; could be introduced as a future tool in upper elementary

Montessori mathematics develops perception and intuition; the children learn their facts through the consistent use of the Montessori mathematics materials. The fact is, they don't *need* a calculator. 

Any child or adult with experience in mathematics can figure out how to USE one. So it's not about "teaching them the tools they'll need in the future" - they'll figure it out when they get there. 

Graphing calculators are a handy tool - but to gain the maximum benefit, sufficient understanding of the concepts must be applied. Graphing calculators can be useful in middle and high school. Perhaps introduce in upper elementary, but it's not necessary. They have so much else to learn, why hinder them with using a tool that just gets in the way? 



Montessori Large Bead Frame

The small bead frame and large bead frames (sometimes called the "Montessori abacus", which is  not entirely accurate, but it sure looks like one!) are a necessary yet often overlooked piece of Montessori mathematics material.
Large Bead Frame -
goes up to 10 million

They each allow for addition, subtraction and long multiplication and are a step towards abstraction in the process of carrying into new categories and in exchanging.

While this material can be used for 3 operations, the main focus of this material is its teaching of *Long Multiplication* - this IS the Montessori material that teaches all the steps in proper order. Other materials either prepare for it, or expect a child to have this experience tucked away already.

The small bead frame has four bars, going into the thousands (with 10 thousand-beads, it can go to 10-thousand).

The large bead frame, with 7 bars, is the child's first experience going into the MILLIONS. And they LOVE it!

The children also utilize lightness of touch, visual organization, proper order of steps, which is preparation for the division with racks and tubes (test tube division) which starts with short division (1-divisor with a 4-7 digit dividend) and goes into long division (2, 3, or 4-digit divisor into a 4, 5, 6, or 7-digit dividend).

Many primary level children will get to this work and the short division with racks and tubes - generally between 5 1/2 and 6. Whether they get in primary or not, this material is heavily utilized and crucial in lower elementary on their work with long multiplication.

The main thing with this material is the connection to the writing. There is long bead frame paper that goes along with this material, for the children to begin their writing out of long multiplication - one sized for the short bead frame; the other sized for the large bead frame.

They are introduced to the bead frame with nomenclature first; then addition and subtraction just to get a feel for how it works and how the writing on the paper works.

Then they are introduced basic multiplication - 52 taken 3 times for example. They are writing the steps on paper and doing it on the bead frame, so they understand what they are writing and when they are exchanging, WHY they are exchanging or carrying. At this point, they might do a number such as 54 taken 3 times.

Once they are comfortable, they are given longer and longer multiplication examples, until they are making up their own (our goal is for them to create their own numbers, so that they own those numbers and will pay more attention to how they work, what are the patterns, what are the results).

And they begin to add zeroes into their writing.

Before you know it, they are writing out long multiplication problems without the use of the bead frame or a calculator.

AND they are prepared for the greater task of long division!



UPDATED TO ADD due to a small number of private messages received: Yes, there are a couple (?) of album sets you can purchase that do not introduce this material until the 3rd year of lower elementary and seem to indicate that it is an upper elementary work. AMI albums sit this material firmly at 5-8 years of age for normally functioning children, with the children working with it as long as they need (through any age). The fact is, upper elementary children are getting "less fiddly with the beads" (as quoted by one of my AMI trainers) and should really be far beyond the introductory stages to this material if they have had Montessori math since at least 5 1/2; still working with it as needed, but not JUST receiving it at age 8. If just getting it at age 8, they won't be doing LONG division until at least age 9, perhaps even 10, long after kids in the public schools have already started it; and Montessori has prepared them from the time they were 3 if they've been with Montessori that long - even starting at 5 1/2, there will be minimal slowing down in the early mathematics presentations. The big question is, if they're not doing long multiplication stages and long division stages at age 6 and 7, what have they been doing?
NEW children (starting Montessori after age 6 1/2 or 7) and children with severe learning impairments will follow a later schedule. THAT IS OKAY - but they are the exception and their needs should be considered when "Following the Child".

It applies to primary, but there are hints of elementary as well; including that transition time between the two planes of development.



Exercises of Practical Life - Characteristics of the Materials

            
Some of this applies more to classrooms; the lovely thing about practical life is that it starts in the home, so homes already have the natural lay-out they need to meet the child's needs in this area. Just have items out in the proper areas for the child to practice these skills (pouring happens in the kitchen or bathtub; shoe polishing can happen on the porch or balcony, etc). 
  • familiar to the child, having been seen at home and elsewhere.
  • culturally representative of all the children in the environment
  • presented in sequence of graded difficulty for each individual child (i.e. chopsticks and forks are present for a mix of children including western and oriental cultures, but the appropriate tool is presented first to the appropriate child, then switched as a later exercise for each child).
  • physically proportionate to child, sized such that they are maximally useful for him
  • somewhat fragile to encourage control of movement, yet functional and useful for the child.
  • Psychologically appropriate materials demonstrate an obvious use, as the three year old child does not have abstract thinking as such; toothbrushes should not be used in polishing as the tendency is to brush one’s teeth with it, for example.
  • maintained: clean, complete and intact.
  • attractive to the child, as an invitation to the will and an inspiration to act. 
  • can have embellishments such as functional decorations which serve to clarify use of the materials, i.e. a tiny embroidered shoe on the shoe-polishing cloths, or a leaf fabric as the duster handle for dusting leaves. 
  • Solid color fabrics and materials are preferred over prints unless the print directly relates to the activity, allowing the child to see the coordination of materials needed for a given work. Children associate these things - so learning to count with a seasonal item will lead to an irrational connection. 
  • independent sets of materials with all the needed materials together in one place so that the child can easily locate the needed materials and begin his work (most of us think of trays here - it doesn't have to be trays, but that's the idea ;) )
  • aprons should be sorted in such a way that the appropriate apron is easily located, either folded with the material, or hanging near the material with proper color- or print-coordination. 
  • Exceptions would include having only one area for all brooms, dustpans, hand-brushes, mops and such – with these materials, the child knows where to go for everything needed to clean up a mess.
  • one of each given work (not two trays of glass polishing)
  • but similar sets of materials, i.e. pouring of grain and of water; separate, similar polishing sets for wood, glass, and metal. 
  • Each set of materials should be differentiated from others in color, size, texture, shape or placement, so that the child can more easily identify which aprons and cloths, for example, go with which materials.
  • within a presentation, the items are color-coded to one another, aiding the child in knowing what belongs together. Everything does not have to be the same color, but there should be enough similarity for the child to readily recognize appropriate grouping. - so wood polishing on a wood tray, with a wood oilcloth ring, with a wood bowl to hold the cotton ball
  • The separation of objects from tools should reflect the natural set-up of the home life. For example, a shoe is not kept with the shoe polishing set, since shoes are naturally kept by the door or in a closet of some sort; fruits and vegetables are stored in a separate dish on the counter or in the fridge, not in the drawer at home with the peeling and cutting instruments. This more realistic set-up keeps the motivation for activity practical and more readily applicable to home-life.    
  • The exercises move from simple to complex on the shelves and in order of presentation - left to right and up to down (adjust for your culture's order of reading - this is an indirect preparation), i.e. pouring grain before pouring water, dusting a leaf before plant care, folding napkins before setting the table, using familiar objects before using less familiar ones. This is a key concept in the materials, above all others, in how the materials are laid out in the exercises of practical life as well as other areas in the room.
  • The materials should be displayed almost like a window display, attracting the interest of the child. All similar items should be together and in developmental sequence, for example all polishing should be together in order of developmental sequence, all pouring together, etc. and everything should be within the reach of the child’s eyes and hands.

Reading Development in Montessori

FOCUS ON THE KEYS - reading is not a curriculum or a tedious chore, but communicating with oneself and with others. It is a connection between people without spoken word.

At all ages, give the children life experiences so that they have something to write about.

Reading aloud: At primary and most of lower elementary, children learning to read should NOT be expected to read aloud - we give "commands" (such as "get a mat") and see if they have read it correctly because they have followed the command correctly. This is a fantastic game to play with all children learning to read - especially giving them "commands" they would not normally get to do ("run in the hall", "step on a mat", "share a sweet with a pal"). If you want children to read aloud, give them plenty of time to read it on their own first - and come to you when they are ready. 


Primary: Children will *write* before they will read.

Keys at primary:
  • language games 
  • sandpaper letters
  • movable alphabet (wood)
  • sandpaper phonograms (digraphs, blends)
  • puzzle words
  • phonogram cards
  • 3-part cards in areas of interest (4-part cards, definition cards, definition strips are extensions)
  • From there, reading has developed and further materials are used in reading analysis and applying that reading to other areas of life and learning: word study, science explorations, geography, music, mathematics, parts of speech, function of words, punctuation


Elementary: Children just learning to read in elementary, typically *read* simultaneously with writing. We have remedial reading and writing to give a new child to elementary who does not have these skills, so that they can function within the classroom. We do not withhold cosmic education from them - we introduce all other aspects of the classroom despite the lack of reading skills.

Keys at elementary:
  • grammar boxes
  • sentence analysis
  • good literature from which to pull samples (no worksheets here!)
  • Age 8: begin reading aloud during family read-aloud time
  • UPPER ELEMENTARY: Can be reading aloud frequently - dramatic tellings, speeches, reports.



Remediation: If a child does not learn to read by the age of 5, the next most natural window is 8-9.

At these moments (either 4-5 1/2 or 8-9), learning to read will progress quickly from little/no skills to at least a 3rd grade reading level in a matter of weeks, sometimes days. 5th or 6th grade reading level can be expected in less than a year of learning to read. Children CAN learn to read at other time-frames, but it will be more tedious and easily thwarted.

  • Keep it light, keep it interesting. 
  • Reading should NOT be a chore. 
  • Think 3-5 short bursts (5-10 minutes TOPS) of practice throughout the day, instead of 30 minutes all at once. 
  • Do not withhold other subjects or hold back in other subjects due to lack of reading ability. 
  • Interest and practicality fuel reading ability and desire. 
  • Let them go ahead to something harder when they need to - this can encourage them to want to continue learning to read. 
  • Turn off technology until the child is a confident reader. 
  • Continue other studies as normal, including language studies. 
  • Continue reading aloud to all children. 


Montessori Materials

The most distinct difference between Montessori and other methods is in the nature of the materials: 


Montessori materials are not didactic (teaching tools), but self-teaching tools. 


These materials are not for the teacher to teach, but for the child to discover and learn on his own. 



The adult presents a concept and a correct use of the materials; the children explore within the confines of respect, responsibility and expectations (ie with elementary work contracts). 


The children teach themselves – these materials are developmental materials. They fit for a stage in the development of life, as the child is constructing himself from the environment around him.
